When a heat sink is combined with a fan, as a single, unified cooling solution, the generic term fan heatsink is used to describe this system. Fan heat sinks use either an axial fan or fan blower mounted on top of or next to a heatsink to generate local airflow around the fins of a heat sink. Fans mounted on top of the heat sink and blow down into the fins (normal to the base) are also known as impingement coolers.
The directional airflow provided by the fan ensures more efficient heat transfer from the fins to the ambient. When fan heat sinks are engineered into the system, they can provide many years of uninterrupted service.
Fan heat sinks provide cooling in many short-term and long-term applications. Their small size, ability to provide spot cooling, and relative efficiency make them an ideal solution. They can also cool inside closed environments. A fan heat sink is an excellent method to
ensure localized cooling of a specific device (e.g. microprocessors, graphics chips or chip sets).
Improve the volumetric impedance of any given cooling solution (as much as 2X an equivalent non-ducted cooling design).
ThermaFlo develops many fan heat sink solutions, most of which are application specific. In our microprocessor section of the website, many CPU heat sinks are fan-ready waiting for fans to be added as an accessory. In this manner the customer can chose a fan that has the features they require for their system (size, airflow, bearing system, speed, acoustics, etc.).
